Spider Veins


Spider veins are small, purplish veins that lie near the surface of the skin. Often they occur in tight bundles or internetworked veins that look like spiderwebs. Spider veins are caused by malfunctioning one way valves that keep blood flowing back to the heart. When these valves break they cause blood to pool, expanding and twisting the affected veins. Spider veins are caused by the same circulatory phenomena that causes varicose veins. Many different factors are associated with spider veins, but genetics is the primary risk factor for developing them.
